PORTRAIT OF MENDELSSOHNMendelssohn on Mull are delighted to put a special portrait of Mendelssohn on public display for the first time at this year’s Festival. The portrait was painted during Mendelssohn’s famous first trip to Scotland in 1829 and can be viewed at the Festival’s final concert in St John’s Cathedral, Oban, on Saturday 4 July 2009 at 7.30pm. The painting, authenticated by Sotheby’s, is an early work by the Scottish artist Thomas Duncan RSA and has been kindly loaned to the Festival by its owner. The public viewing has been made possible by the generous sponsorship of AXA Art insurance.

On 8th August 1829, Mendelssohn set off by steamer from Oban to Tobermory. That night from a room in a Tobermory house, he wrote the first few bars of the Hebrides Overture. You may be interested to know that the house where Mendelssohn stayed on his visit to Mull is for sale. It is the pale green house which lies back between the Co-op and the Anchorage. Mull Museum apparently has some evidence of his visit, which I have not seen, but it would be good if there could be a special display at the Museum in honour of Mendelssohn’s 200th birthday.
Prof. Donald Leach CBEMarilyn writes:Thank you to everyone who came to the memorial event for Donald, and to those who could not attend but sent their love. Richard organised a ‘Mullfest’ to be remembered: all the players were alumni: Maggie Miller, Rosie Townhill, Emma Stevenson, Kirsty Orton and Heather Kennedy. The choir from St Michael and All Saints in Edinburgh sang Faure’s Requiem, as Donald had wished, and in between we heard from Mendelssohn, of course, but also Handel and Gershwin. It was a pity that Donald was not there to hear it, although I was not the only person to remark that he was surely there in spirit. It was a great joy to me that my eldest son, Richard, and his youngest brother, Andy played a Mendelssohn piano duet. I hope they will perform it again at the festival this year. Thank you too for those who sent donations to two charities Donald held dear: the Mull Festival itself and Prostate Scotland. It is not too late to send donations in his memory. With heartfelt thanks for your support.
