Welcome to the Festival

By Robert Fleming, Trust Chairman
The Mendelssohn on Mull Festival was founded by the renowned violinist Leonard Friedman in 1988, and takes its name from Mendelssohn's visit to the Western Isles in the 1820s, inspiring him to write his Hebrides Overture.  Leonard Friedman had been working with some of Scotland’s most talented young musicians and realized that although they were technically accomplished, even brilliant, their lives were so focused on playing their own particular instruments that there was nothing informing their work. In 1988 he took a small group to the Isle of Mull to benefit from working intensively with more experienced professionals, and to enjoy the natural environment.  This proved to be a highly significant development and the Festival is now well established with an international reputation.

The Mendelssohn on Mull Trust aims to provide young professional musicians with opportunities to develop their practical music skill at an advanced level, in an environment which encourages personal, spiritual and cultural development. Since 2000 the Trust has also developed its presence on Mull with the Mull Children’s String Summer School, the educational outreach activity of the Mendelssohn on Mull Festival.

The Festival enjoys considerable critical acclaim, and the 2006 festival was featured in The Times, Guardian, The Herald, and Scotland on Sunday as well as on BBC Radio 3. Audiences come back year after year to enjoy the unique combination of Mull’s outstanding natural beauty and music of the highest standards being performed in intimate settings, castles, churches, and Iona Abbey.
