Mendelssohn on Mull celebrates the 40th Anniversary of the Chilingirian Quartet

It is with great pleasure that I welcome Ronnie and Susie, my colleagues in the Chilingirian Quartet, to be mentors alongside Marcia and Stephen.  Unfortunately, the Quartet will not be complete, as our cellist Philip is recovering from an operation on his hand.

When Leonard Friedman created the Festival, he invited distinguished chamber musicians such as Emmanuel Hurwitz and Martin Lovett to guide young players through the greatest music. It is my privilege to continue this wonderful tradition.

Preparations for the Festival start with the music for the quartets, quintets, and sextets performed being sent out to the players well in advance. This enables a very concentrated day and a half of rehearsing to deliver three programmes performed at venues which are ideally suited to chamber music.

The process of teaching through playing is, I believe, very productive and rare. Once on stage, however all players feel equally responsible for the successful interpretation of the works. In these masterpieces by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Bruckner, and Richard Strauss there is nowhere to hide!

Many of the Young Professionals have described their experience of participating in Mendelssohn on Mull as defining moments in their lives. The magical combination of the island's rugged beauty and the talent and energy of the Young Professionals makes me anticipate the Festival eagerly!

Happy listening!
