Mendelssohn on Mull 20008 was really two-festivals-in-one!

The first presented three chamber groups in castles, churches, abbeys and village halls, playing a wide variety of music by classical, romantic and twentieth century composers. Woven in was a strand of mysterious and 'natural' music to facilitate our second theme - that of Stephen Montague’s “Apparitions” - a special event held in Duart Castle.

Our Bartok, Shostakovich and Schoenberg pieces blended well with music composed by Stephen and together presented as part of a visual and aural experience late in the evening on the most perfect summer’s night I've experienced on Mull. Audience and performers were immersed in the silent 'creatures' who were moving throughout the Castle’s dark corridors and stairs. Ensemble 1685 and John Kenny, on a replica of a 2000-year old Carnyx, contributed extraordianry sounds. All present had a truly memorable experience. We even had an appearance by Paganini aka Michael Gurevich!

My thanks go to my fellow mentors, Marcia, Gaby, Sam, Ali, Graham and Richard, as well as to Stephen and his highly talented team. To Robert Fleming and all the other trustees, as well as the many volunteers who worked so hard during the week, go my sincere thanks for supporting the most important aspect of our Festival - the bringing together and furthering the musical understanding of a very talented group of young multi-national professionals who are the real reason why all journey to Mull each year.

Next year, our 21st year, we shall focus on the anniversaries of Mendelssohn and Haydn.
